PROJECT PORTFOLIO: ASID 2005 Showcase House- Second Level Bathroom, Lake of the Isles, Minneapolis

Dan Whittaker is an instructor and advisor at the Art Institutes International-Minnesota Interior Design Program. In the winter of 2005, eight students in the advanced residential design course taught by Dan embarked on an amazing project-- an undertaking that would enable the students to participate in the design, bid and construction of their own project! The Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) granted the group of students the main guest bathroom on the second level of the 2005 Showcase House just north of Lake of the Isles in the Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis. The group of students tackled a difficult design problem: how to create an aesthetically pleasing bathroom in small windowless room in the middle of an eclectic nineteenth century home! The original bathroom, as the pictures show, suffered from an unfortunate 1970s remudling and was entirely gutted. The students worked over the holiday break and by early January 2005, they emerged with a design proposal that won kudos from the Showcase House Committee. They eagerly embarked on the next step: making their design ideas become reality. The home is scheduled to be complete for the May thirteenth kickoff event, and through the diligent work of eight dedicated students, the bathroom too shall be ready!
